Question by :: mother nature::: How is blood meal permitted to be used in organic farming?
Is there any way to get around slaughterhouse by-products if blood meal is used even for organic fruits and vegetables?

Because the Meat industry won’t have a competitive industry exist that doesn’t in some way give it money, as in money for blood meal…….sheesh, how gross.
They want to have their fingers in every pie so that they will be unstoppable. Pretty much already accomplished that from where Im sitting.

I think you misunderstand what it is meant for something to be orgainc.
They use bloodmeal as a fertilizer so they can avoid using synthetic organophosphates and synthetic nitrogen sources.
The best organic sources of that is animal products. Bone meal is another example used in organic farming.
If you don’t want chemical used, and you don’t want animal products used..where do you think the plants are going to get everything they need. The ecosystem has evolved to use animal products to fertilize plants as much as they do other dead plant matter.

That depends on where you are: From what I understand, blood meal and bone meal were banned in the US because of threats with mad cow disease. I could be wrong here though.
I would say to call your local farmers (via co-op, market, email whatever) and ask them about it personally.

Blood meal is organic and works better that many other so called organic chemicals and fertilizers since it has very little adverse effect on the soil.
The use of blood meal is not because of profiteering by slaughterhouses and the meat industry. It is because organic crop farmers want to use the better alternative on their crops. No farmer is forced to use blood meal. In fact, it is a waste product of the meat industry and would have been discarded but organic farmers found a way to use it to their advantage. The same way that pig farmers buy waste foods from hotels, restaurants and fruit and vegetable processing centers for their animals. I personally know pig farmer who feeds past the “best by ..”ice cream to his organically raised free range pigs.
By the way, fertile “soil” is made up of dirt, minerals and more importantly decaying bodies and bodily fluids of animals (including living bacteria etc) that died there. Even if you do not actively use blood and bone meal, you are still growing crops in decaying animal matter.

I agree. The reason they do it is because its a non-synthetic type of fertilizer high in nitrogen. However I personally wouldn’t use the word to call blood meal fertilizer, because it doesn’t make anything fertilely blessed it just burns plants. Farmers like it because it makes their crops grow big, but bigger isn’t better, diverse rich soil is crucial for having nutrient packed plants. The only way you can have nutrient rich, truly organic plants is grow them yourself and use plenty of plant compose that you move around regularly.
A good question is why does things that burns plant make them grow bigger and faster? Well it rushes the plants. All plants know their goal in life, flourish and reproduce. But if they are being burned by chemicals then they have to speed up their growing because they fear they might die. So they are only trying to get their seeds produced. They make the fruits that are the seeds protector bigger because they feel the seed might be in danger of getting burned too.

If you don’t like it, plant your own food.
