the tomato cages are to deter feral cats from using the garden as a posh litter box. some citrus peels were added after lunch.
i’ve got some rearranging to do. i’ve had a change of heart and would like to try growing sweet peas or a climbing squash on the net by the fence. eventually i’ll put the pots in the back somewhere else and put in some perilla or lettuce or both. i’ve got a third raised bed where i might try some corn/edamame/zucchini … sort of like the Three Sisters with a twist. (hm, i should buy some fish heads to put in the ground.)
Question by Mr Average Joe: Bee hive science project for my 13 year old son?
My son wants to raise honey bees and observe the hives social interactions as a science project.
He got it all planned out and I’m all for it, but can this be dangerous?
Give your answer to this question below!
He really should get some experience with an expert first before trying. And there are other factors you would have to consider like neighbors.
He needs to know how to handle them before embarking on it.
How is he to observe, does he have cameras.
Why don’t he start with an ants , might be safer and easier.
Just one more thing, it might look to you that he has everything planned out correct, but to a untrained eye how would you know, with no experience how would he know him self

This could potentially be dangerous. Neither of you sound like experienced beekeepers. Thus, this could be very dangerous. Like someone else said, you might think you have it planned out, but do you really know what you’re doing? Perhaps you have beekeepers in your town or neighborhood. Maybe you could go to the beekeeper and observe them there, under the watch of a professional. Good luck otherwse. Hope all works out in the end.

First and foremost I would certainly encourage this kid to keep bees.True enough it’s a little expensive getting started, but with any good luck at all he will profit from this very soon not only in money but in satisfaction.I have spent many hours sitting by a bee hive simply watching the little buggers work and it’s a very relaxing pass time get him to read up on the subject, visit with other beekeepers, visit a apiary(bee yard) prior to getting the bees.Forget about starting a bee project for this year ,it’s too late in the season and be ready next spring mid April or early march. I will note here there three things that can’t be Synthesized in a laboratory that bees can make and they are honey, bees wax and propelis.Contact me any time.I will share what I know with you and good luck with this project!

Another idea is to watch bees, wasps and flies going to flower,
There are many different types and he could take pictures of them with a digital camera and identify them.
