(Found in a box with a bunch of old photos.) Every spring a mama duck would raise her ducklings in the courtyard at Nathan Hale High School and we could see them frequently from German class. This is probably spring 1981 or 82.

Question by dvdclarke: Raising Ducks and Chickens?
How are the requirement for raising ducks differ from that for chickens?

  1. Ducks don’t require nest boxes and can survive in 0 degree Farenheit weather, but must have liquid water. Ducks also must have access to snow, water, and draft-free shelter. Unless you get wood ducks, they won’t need perches, just a box with dry bedding. They also, obviously, must have suitable duck food. It is suggested you put large-holed mesh over the food and water, otherwise ducks can make quite a mess of them. The holes must have enough room for a duck beak without enough for a foot.

  2. I have had ducks and chickens in the same pen. The only difference is the ducks need plenty of water, I would suggest a pool for kids would be big enough. They like green grass, bugs, 16 % protein pellets and no meat. I used to throw day old bread to my ducks. Don’t forget the water. Its almost a must have. And BTW they will eat green vegetable scraps, but not meat. Good Luck!
