Some canned food went bad in the pantry and we enjoyed a bacteria farm for an afternoon.

Yikes! Major canning fail. I think you used a hot-water bath instead of a pressure canner. Also, from the look of it, you tried to can refried beans? Major no-no. Never can anything that is thick like that. Instead, can the unmashed beans, then mash them up before you use them.
@believerinthd Wha??? Where did all that come from? I usually try to speak of my own experiences, but just got fired up at your cavalier attitude about it all. I’m over it and hope you are too. I don’t see wussy, but I will watch the overprotective part of your criticism. See! Something good even comes out of ridiculous back and forths. Chillin’ here. You too!!

@Ballofuentes Really? I love old sayings.
The one that comes to mind is. “There is a time and a place for everything.” There is no
excuse to laugh at this. Hope you all got through it ok, but it is not funny. No laughing here.

I just wonder how much laughing you would have done if they had exploded in the pantry or in one of the kids faces. It isn’t funny and there is no excuse.

@jleedill @mkmason2002 Not really. There is nothing wrong with the glass just dump it rinse it then sanitize it. Botulism is probably one of the most comon deadly problems yet the spores are quite abundant in the soils most our root crops grow in. If you are experienced or educated in food preservation you would know that there is no reason not to reuse this glass. The processing is all that prevents the same thing from happening to virtually every thing you put in a jar.
I would have just thrown it all in the trash not open it. Since it was a gift to you you wouldn’t be losing anything. So my thought on this DO NOT OPEN! JUST THROW AWAY!
@metalwarrior27 I am far from being a germ phobic, but I am experienced in food preservation and food science and have a healthy respect for the seriousness of this. I know it seems hard to throw the jars away without opening, but when you consider the cost of replacing jars, to the possible long term health problems or even fatality, it doesn’t even compare. I encourage anyone interested in home canning and other food preservation to go ahead, just follow reliable directions.
@jleedill omg you guys with the fear of bacteria are insane. Grow up and live a little stop being so afraid of everything.
we are becoming too sterilized no wonder people get sick all the time now. are bodies cant handle the slightest bit of germs.

I just read all the comments. It was a food spread called Zacuscă for eating like salsa or jam. Zacuscă contains eggplant, cooked beans and roasted peppers – VERY DANGEROUS to can because they are low acid foods. Can vegetables and meats under pressure ONLY. Boiling alone kills bacteria but spores of Clostridium Botulinum can survive and grow inside the jar.
RULE: If Lid is popped UP, don’t eat! Don’t give it away either – geesh!

OPENING THESE JARS WAS DANGEROUS. YOU WERE, PARDON ME, STUPID TO OPEN THESE IN YOUR KITCHEN AS YOU BREATHED IN THIS BACTERIA.
