Would one select homosexual people for repopulation?

Question by Stealth101: Would one select homosexual people for repopulation?
If the earth was doomed and we would send out an expedition to populate another planet, would you let gay people on board?
Don’t get me wrong, i have nothing against homosexuals, but the expedition is supposed to produce offspring for mankind, and homosexuals can’t do that. And i would imagine that on such an expedition there are no places to spare. But if it was some kind of lottery, is it not wrong to doom people just because they happen to be gay?
Yea, i’m not sure homosexuality is a culture, but it’s the idea to reproduce so…

  4. Well, it’s not just about people, it’s also about varying viewpoints.

As long as there is enough genetic diversity to sustain a healthy community, it couldn’t hurt to take homosexuals. It would promote tolerance in the new culture. If there’s not enough genetic diversity for a healthy population, then obviously you can’t take people that won’t breed, because there’s no point if they’ll all die anyway.

  5. no would not send any gay people
as they would not help to make more people
but if gay is in the genes some of the kids would be gay so no loss

  6. No. And I am all for gay rights. But the thing is this:
You wouldn’t send elderly people, disabled people, infertile people or people carrying HIV or any genetic diseases either. The only people permitted to go would/should be 100% healthy young adults, preferably from varied racial backgrounds.

That is, if the mission was to ensure the survival of the species.

  7. No, select gay people for that wouldn’t make sense since the purpose would be PRODUCE OFFSPRING and as you pointed out, they can’t do that.

  8. I love this question! Realize that “repopulation” is more than just having sex. There is a great deal of work and infrastructure that must go into raising children; establishing systems to create and sustain food and shelter… All units need not – and probably shouldn’t – be sexually reproductive.

Somehow, we’ve had hundreds of thousands of years of “evolution” and yet homosexuals abound. Perhaps even though homosexuals less-often pass on their genes, other members of their family survive at least enough not to be crowded-out by the exclusively-hetero genes. From this, I argue that there is at least *some* good purpose to the homosapien population.

What that purpose may be is speculation. Regardless of reproductive ability, homosexuals are capable of things that are good for the species at large, just like the heterosexuals. While caretakers and workers are still necessary, too many reproductive couples would take up too many resources to support population growth. It may also reflect something about child abandonment rates – homosexual couples often have an interest in raising children, and can pick up the “slack” caused by resource issues between heterosexual couples.

If you were performing a bee repopulation project, it would be a mistake to choose half half queen (female) and half drone bees (male) and leave out the workers. The bee’s naturally-occuring ratio of sexuality (1f/1m/98a) must be preserved in order for the system to work. While the human sexuality is near the opposite end of that model (48f/47m/5a), it would be a mistake to think that we will thrive *best* in a population of absolute zero infertility.

If we’re aiming for survival, it would be best to choose the most adaptable. While sexual reproduction is a form of adaptation, and must be present in a repopulation project, it certainly is not the most important trait and it would be silly to require it exclusively.

  9. Yes of course, we could fill a spaceship full of them and send them on a recce to sus out the ground, that could be their contribution the saving of the human race. They’d be no good to humanity in later repopulation flights.
