Question by Joe C.: Going to Detroit for a Tigers game?
Me and my buddy are driving from Chicago to Detroit to watch the Whitesox lose! We were planning on touring the city a bit and maybe get something to eat around the park. All you Detroit people, help me out! What are some cool things to see in your city? What parts shall we stay out of? Where would you recommend we go eat that is preferably close to Comerica? Thanks!
Feel free to answer in the comment section below
Here are few touristy places to go:
Detroit Institute of Arts
Detroit Science Center & IMAX Theater
The Henry Ford
Motown Historical Museum, Hitsville USA
There are 3 Casino & Hotels downtown to stay at if you want to stay in a nice place that is what I recommend. MGM and Motor City have hotels, Greektown is not completed yet. Outside of that you will find Marriotts, Sheratons etc. There is a Hilton Garden on Gratiot, not far from the ballpark at all. Some teams stay at the Atheneum as well. I think Jim Leyland lives there. Maybe you can find out where the Sox stay.
You will find plenty of bars and restaurants around the ballpark. Lafayette and American Coney Island have been around for a long time and are great diners for some cheap food. Anywhere in the Greektown district is fine for food and it is not all “Greek”. Mexicantown in SW Detroit offers you a good amount of Mexican restaurants. Places that are extremely close to the ballpark are Cheli’s Chili Bar, The Elwood Diner, Hockeytown Cafe and the State Bar.
You should not find yourself in a “bad” area if you go to the game, hang around downtown or any of the attractions I listed. Just like any city including Chicago, you know what areas look like you should turn around and go the other way or get on the expressway.
Give this website a glance and it should help you decide where to stay and what to do

Enjoy the game!

A couple of great places to go are the Hard Rock Cafe in the Comp-u-ware building. That place itself is cool. Also, if you’re into art, the DIA is pretty cool. Another cool place to eat is the Hockey Town Cafe. Also, I would try and go over to canada over the Ambasador bridge. Detroit is also known for some of it’s night clubs. Also, not TOO far from Detroit is the Henry Ford Museaum. That’s also pretty fun for people that havn’t been there before. (I remember a bunch of field trips there.)
About the place to stay out of, I would just stay in the city for the most part. If you guys are spending the night, I would stay either at the Renacence center (GM building) or the ponchatrain hotel.
OH YEAH, also, if you’re visiting on the weekend, check out Eastern Market if you want to get some great food.

I will assume you and your pal are young guys and that high culture isn’t on your radar, I’ll also assume you already have you hotel rooms downtown somewhere.
Print out a google map of the area.
Head to the aTownPump and enjoy a couple of cool ones.

Head south (toward the river) down Park Ave. and hit the Park Bar. Get a swarma at the bar and look arcoss the street to a broken down building with boarded up windows. That’s where the WHite Stripes recorded their first album.
Head further south on Park till you get to Grand Circus Park. It is not a circus and it’s not that grand, but it is a park. Follow it around and check out the David Whitney Building. Built by Daniel Burnham … the Chicago guy who created the World’s Fair and dreamt up the Chicago Plan. Head south on Woodward Ave to Grand River, turn right and walk a short block to the Urban Bean Company. Get a latte.
Ask Josh about the area and listen to what he has to say. Get directions to Layfeyette Coney Island. Be careful walking through Capital Park. Keep your hands out of your pockets and don’t talk to anyone.
At layfeyette coney island, order “two on one” get a beer and watch the people.
From Layfeyette head to Campus Martius and pull up a chair to watch the folks feed the aligators. Live chickens are extra.
From there head kitty-corner to the Checker Bar. Drink some more. PBRs are 2 bucks.
Stumble out of the Checker and ask directions to the ice cream place around the corner. Ask for a Boston Cooler, extra thick.
In your drunken, ice cream coma, state head up Randolph street to where it runs into Broadway. Go into Henry the Hatter’s and try on hats. Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey and Kid Rock bought their hats there.
With new hats head north on Broadway and find the Detroit Beer Company. Microbrew, outdoor tables, ala Rogers Park.
From the Detroit Beer Company head to the Stadium and try to pass the Breathalyzer to get in.
have fun.
Oh, in Canada they feature something called the ballet. Bring your Passport and find out for yourself about the ballet.

They’ve already said it all, I can’t really add anything.
Bill S – Way to mention the Windsor Ballet in your answer. You’ve made my day!

Since you are from Chicago, go to Pizzapapalis in Greektown and get the best Chicago style pizza ever! Trust me, I’ve been to chicago and have had your pizza, but Pizzapapalis has the best!!! Nightlife can be found in Royal Oak and Ferndale. Go to a coney island place and get a coney god, NOT from Coney Island in NYC. Belle Isle is a city island park bigger than Central park in NYC, that can be reached by going east on jefferson. Campus Martius is a cool place to hang out during the day. If you want to you can check out the mansions of Indian Village on the east side, but that’s the only neighborhood to really check out. While short, a ride on the People Mover (PM) is pretty fun. Our “mass transportation” response, less than 15 minutes and costs 50 cents. The Riverwalk in front of the RenCen (our skyscraper) is really cool. There is a PM station for the RenCen. Have fun!
