Raising tomatoes indoors in the winter?

Question by Wisco Joe: Raising tomatoes indoors in the winter?
I’m thinking of trying to raise tomatoes indoors so I can have fresh produce year round.. Has anyone done this? Are certain varieties better than others? I only want one or 2 plants and in WI. of course the winters are harsh so I’d use grow lights and keep the plant in my basement…
thanks

  1. I tried it once, got bugs and tossed them.
However, if you don’t end up with some kind of insect issue, you would need to think about pollination. No bees will be inside.
I’d use a pipe cleaner or small paintbrush and swab, gently, the buds.
You’ll never get the wonderful taste and texture, I don’t think, but it could be interesting. Watch those grow lites if you have basement windows, the neighbors will think you are growing pot! : )

  2. House needs to be HOT and lots of light with timers. Cherry, grape and sweet 100’s tomatoes are good choices.
