I loved the colors in these acres and acres of mustard cover crops growing in the valley, replenishing the depleted soil and readying it for Salinas’ #1 economic crop, Leaf Lettuce, although a little part of me hates it for becoming a naturalized invasive weed. I’m pretty sure that it’s Brassica nigra, black mustard.

Sounds like locusts, which also generally emerge during 7-year cycles.
